Battlefield 2 had a lot of great ideas and game features going for itself. It had very good map design for Conquest and a great balance in infantry and land vehicles, air vehicles could dominate for those that mastered them and the commander mode could actually change the battle for a team. It was a very fun game and I enjoyed my years of playing it.

With that said, it was very innovative, but it still wasn’t the greatest FPS of all time. Someone recently posted in the Battlelog forums a “Veterans Only” thread that was talking about how mods made previous Battlefield games great. While it is true that there were great mods in previous titles, they did not fix all the issues in any Battlefield game. Sometime back, a very long time ago, DICE mentioned that only about 10% of the player base even played on mods. So 90% are left out in the cold.

Let me first start off by saying that I did not want Commander to return to Battlefield 4 and I did not miss it in BF3. I also wrote about that and what I thought Commander Mode would be like. I was pretty spot on with my hunches.

So Battlefield 4 has a commander mode and I have played it a bit and figured out the system and all that and I found it to be wanting. Now why would a guy that didn’t care for Commander Mode and didn’t miss it be playing it? Well, the easiest answer is that it’s part of the game and I play the entire game. I didn’t care if it returned or not, but that did not mean that I didn’t like it in the past or don’t like it now. I always feel that something in the game that is alright could be made better and that if you have some ideas, you should share them.

So, here we are.

Something that I have been seeing in Battlefield since the start of Hardcore Mode in Bad Company 2 is how it is “easy mode” and not really “hardcore”. I’ve seen it a lot lately that I thought I would post about it some and go ahead and get my thoughts out there on it as well.

First, I have always played both modes and if either regular mode or hardcore mode ever fell away forever, I would be fine. I play both modes to work on areas of my game that I feel are slacking or need improvements on. Both modes can help accomplish that.

So I am hitting the iron while it is hot on this one. Last week I saw this starting and then some other events occurred and I knew what was coming next. I just wish I had time to write the article then as it would have made me look like a GENIUS of the future! Oh well, I guess I can just catch people up instead 😀

Here is the timeline:

Last week people started “attacking/blaming” YouTube content creators that they KNEW Battlefield 4 was in bad shape and hid the fact about it and instead only showed the good of it and therefore TRICKED people into purchasing a flawed/broken game. ( I wrote about some of the problems here. ) This all happened on twitter with several YouTube people.

On Monday, the 20th, it gets reported that Microsoft paid Machinima YouTube creators to promote the XBox One. Normally that is not a big deal, but the stipulations to the deal was that they ” may not say anything negative or disparaging about Machinima, Xbox One or any of its Games in your Campaign Video”. Actual quote from the contract.

Yesterday, the 21st, it was leaked on Reddit that EA had a similar campaign as Microsoft for Battlefield 4. So this is causing a blow up even more-so that started last week.

That’s right Battlefield fans! Vacation is over for DICE and they are coming back into the office and what is the first noticable mentions to get started with? Rebalance! Same type of word as “adjustments”. Basically nerfing the game like they did with Battlefield 3.

Don’t get me wrong, Battlefield 4 needs some fine tuning, it is true and I do have a jaded memory of all the changes back and forth in Battlefield 3. During the beta I left feedback on how weak vehicles were and how splash damage wasn’t really good and how the attack chopper really wasn’t that threatening to vehicles. I still feel those things need to be looked at a bit more and adjusted. There are a few issues with this though.

The last few weeks, as well as the last few years, the article where DICE mentions “We’ll never charge for DLC…” statement has come up when it comes to free content in games. You all know I have pretty much focused on Battlefield and I will here in this article as well, but I will also be covering DLC in general and my thoughts on it and the industry.

You may not agree with everything I have to say on this topic and that is OK, but hopefully you will look through everything I have mentioned and see why I stand where I do.

Many of you already know that the first week of Battlefield 4 has been rough. There has been a lot of different issues from lagging to client crashes. BF4 has been released for 1 week and 1 day as of this writing, November 6th, 2013.

Most of the issues have been:

  • Server crashes
  • Client crashes
  • Rubber banding
  • Net-Code/Lag issues
  • Loss of unlocked items

As you can see, it is a number of problems and these are not all the little bugs, just the main ones that seem to be affecting everyone. There are also little bugs throughout the game. One bug I think is really strange is that a silenced QBU-88 will, in fact, disable all audio for everyone in a server. The only fix at this time is to exit and re-enter that server. That is a pretty big bug for sure and I have to say, one of the strangest.
