Yes, I am talking about the leading FPS game for, at least, five years running, Call of Duty. Let me just say up front that I played all the CoD titles up to Modern Warfare 2 and I loved them all, though quickly became bored of MW2. I did not play CoD3 as it was console only and for those of you that may not know, I am a PC player. I encourage all gamers to play whatever game they find to be fun. I don’t care if you play on console or PC. I think it is great that someone plays other game types than FPS.  This article is not to bash CoD, but to enforce what I was saying in my previous article about CoD vs Battlefield.

One of the most talked about feature for Battlefield 4 is the return of Commander. I mentioned in my last commander article how I thought we would see the return of that position as well as changes to it. It looks like we were not disappointed. DICE has made a number of changes that will affect the entire position of commander and how it will play. Though the premise is the same, it is different from both Battlefield 2 and 2142.

I have been wanting to write an update on the new commander mode for some time, but have not really had enough information. Since E3 and the release of the Battlelog 2.0 updates, I think we have a pretty good understanding of the mode now.

I tell you, there is nothing more fun than getting into a tank in Battlefield. I have been driving tanks in Battlefield since 1942. I even drove tanks in Call of Duty and they were just as much fun as in Battlefield. The destruction and power that you are given when driving one of these bad boys is just something else. Throwing fear into your enemy and watching infantry run and hide as they hear you coming in. Taking down engineers and C4 welding support (or recon in BF2/142) while rolling over vehicles is just great fun.

First, a congratulations to the Project Reality Team on 8 years of dedicated work to Project Reality, a Battlefield 2 mod. It will soon be out of beta and onto version 1.0. If play Battlefield 2 and would like to check this mod out you can see it here. It is a great mod with a lot of features and maps and they did a very good job bringing a more realistic approach to Battlefield.

Now back on topic…

So are we really getting a new game? Battlefield 3 has been out for almost two years and now, around the corner, is coming Battlefield 4. When I first seen some leaked material I have to say that I found myself thinking how this wasn’t BF4 at all, but a Battlefield 3.5. Everything looked about the same from knife animations to soldier uniforms to even the maps and its layout. I was very disappointed and thought maybe BF3 was going to be my last game. Why would I want to buy BF3 again? It was no different now than when so many people wanted BF3 to be like BF2.

I mention that those people wanted BF 2.5 and not BF3. They wanted everything like BF2 with better graphics. Otherwise, no changes. Even though I felt that 2142 was a better polished Battlefield title than the clunky BF2, it did not matter. It was BF2.5 or nothing. Non-stop complaining about all the other features and the stats and the missing things in BF2. I didn’t want a BF2.5 and why? Because I already owned BF2. Why do I want to buy BF2.5? It’s one of the reasons why I do not buy CoD games anymore. Now, here I am looking at BF 3.5. (more…)

Yes, it is time once again to ponder the same question as two years ago. That question being, “Will Battlefield beat out CoD and take the #1 spot in the universe?” In other words, will it break records and day one sales across the board? It is a very good question that many people ponder and fan-boys flame war about. This question is probably #2 and right next to the question “Which is better, Xbox or PlayStation?”

Well, I, CptainCrunch, am here to answer that question for you. That answer is…… no.

Now before all the rage starts and hate mail/tweets comes in, hear me out on this. It is not that Call of Duty is so great and appealing to everyone that it just cannot be beat and will be the remaining juggernaut for all times. It is also not because Battlefield is such a terrible game and the only thing it has going for it is pretty lighting from the Frostbite engine. No, the reason is much more simple. Activision won the marketing war against EA a few years ago. You see, EA has had some rough years and some decisions it made on its part probably did not help the situation. You also had DICE re-defining itself as not just a Battlefield making developer, but  a REAL game developer. So we had Battlefield 2 and 2142 and then it went quiet for Battlefield. While 2142 was starting to get old and stale for a game, Infinity Ward announces CoD:4 Modern Warfare. It was truly one of the best FPS games made to date. It is probably my #2 favorite of all time. No, BF3 is not my #1 ( gasp ). I would have to say 2142 holds that spot. (more…)
