On first hearing about Field Upgrades for Battlefield many thought there should be some changes and adjustments to the system. Last week DICE released a patch that actually fixed the Field Upgrade system correcting the bugs that would break the upgrade levels when moving to the next round as well as progression in the system itself. This  update had me looking at the upgrade options again to see what “perks” did what as I have forgotten what my choices where. Like many that play Battlefield 4, I had forgotten because there is only one Field Upgrade to really use 3/4ths the time. I decided to post my changes and why while only working with what DICE already has in place. Some people like to invent some different options, but theory is not always as sound as what has been used in practice.

Many of you already know that the first week of Battlefield 4 has been rough. There has been a lot of different issues from lagging to client crashes. BF4 has been released for 1 week and 1 day as of this writing, November 6th, 2013.

Most of the issues have been:

  • Server crashes
  • Client crashes
  • Rubber banding
  • Net-Code/Lag issues
  • Loss of unlocked items

As you can see, it is a number of problems and these are not all the little bugs, just the main ones that seem to be affecting everyone. There are also little bugs throughout the game. One bug I think is really strange is that a silenced QBU-88 will, in fact, disable all audio for everyone in a server. The only fix at this time is to exit and re-enter that server. That is a pretty big bug for sure and I have to say, one of the strangest.

Now I know what you may be thinking. You might be thinking, “Man Crunch, who cares about single player in Battlefield? Multi-player is where it is at and aint nobody got time for single player!” I know and I hear you, however DICE and EA have made a big deal about how the single player is longer and better and more than what Battlefield 3 single player was. Also, we bought it and it is part of the game. DICE spent time making it and EA spent time marketing it and we spent money to have it, rather we play it or not. Also, for some, single player is still fun and important to others. For me it’s also tradition. I played the Bad Company 2 single player before multi-player and same for BF3.  So I decided to write up a review on the single player aspect of Battlefield 4.

**DISCLAIMER: There will be spoilers in the review so if you have not played or plan to play later you may not want to continue or skip down to the last paragraph for final thoughts. I played the PC version of BF4 single player.**

First, let me say that I do not mind a persons opinion on a game. It is their opinion and most the time it doesn’t really matter, much like my own 😀 . For those that know me on forums or in-game know that I don’t really care if someone has a different opinion from me. What does get me though is when people try to state their opinion as a fact and/or state something with nothing to back it up with.

What is a Battlefield 2.5er? – This is a person who loved the Battlefield 2 game, or in most cases only played BF2, and after that only wanted every Battlefield game after that to be Battlefield 2.5. These people usually did not like 2142 and hated and despised the Bad Company Series and Battlefield 3. The reasoning they give for hating those games is because “they are not truly Battlefield”. Features are gone that were in BF2, such as VoIP, squad numbers, commander, smaller maps, different weapon customizations, etc… They are fanatical that Battlefield 2 was the best game in the entire series and any deviation from that is not Battlefield.

So I was thinking about the lost blog writings at TGN and decided to see if Google still had them cached. Sure enough they have a few of them! So I decided to move these here. This was originally posted on June 10th, 2013. One day before the announcement of Commander Mode in BF4. Enjoy!

************************************************************

Ah Yes! The great Commander of Battlefield. The one thing missing in BF3 that would have made it a TRUE Battlefield sequel and not some other exact copy of Call of Duty. Yes, Yes, never mind all the extra game modes and the vehicles and the air power, without Commander, Battlefield is just a CoD wannabe.

We all know that BF3 died quickly in the gaming community because of this one feature. Four months within release the game was a ghost town. You can’t even find servers anymore so DICE is quickly making BF4.

Now, back to reality; BF3 did not have commander. It was one of the features that the community LOUDLY wanted to help make BF3 better (making it BF2.5 for many) and giving those that have not experienced a true Battlefield game something to REALLY get into. Alas, it was not meant to be, but BF3 has still survived and doing well.

As many of you may know, I did not care if BF3 had commander or not. After my years in BF2 and 2142 I had my share of it and the way DICE set up BF3, it really wasn’t something needed. Recon and Support covered most the roles of commander with the artillery, supplies, MAVs, and TUGs. Squad leaders still had the ability to give orders, though for those that read my teamwork post and play Battlefield know how well that goes. (more…)

newcptain3_zps41e6b88cSo after the latest server crash at TGN and the long period of downtime, I got to missing the people and talking and the going-ons in the gaming world. There have been a few things I wanted to write a blog about and could not do so. After a few days of thinking about it I felt I had two choices; 1. Call it done and just float around on the internet as another lurker in forums and not really give my two cents worth or 2. Figure out how to get a blog up and get the show back on the road and get my opinionated ideas back on the internet.

I have had this WordPress account for some time and never really used it. I wanted to grab the CptainCrunch name and thought one day I would build it up and do some stuff. I guess that day has come. I wanted to make a more permanent home and, nothing against TGN, something a little more stable.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I love TGN and all the people involved in the site. I was actually thinking a little more about this change about a month ago after I wrote about Commander being back in BF4. What triggered me thinking about this was that I wanted to post my BF2142 How-To video on being a Commander. A nostalgia piece locked in times of long ago. The problem was that it was a video on the Google system. For those that don’t know this, Google had its own video section before they bought YouTube. Then they decided to merge the two. Then they decided that was a load of crap and instead told everyone they had a period of time to merge it themselves before deleting everything on the Google side. Then they came out and said never mind, all is good and Google will merge it and your content will be there forever. Then all those videos disappeared. Lost forever in some shut down Google server I suppose. (more…)
