First, let me say that I do not mind a persons opinion on a game. It is their opinion and most the time it doesn’t really matter, much like my own 😀 . For those that know me on forums or in-game know that I don’t really care if someone has a different opinion from me. What does get me though is when people try to state their opinion as a fact and/or state something with nothing to back it up with.
What is a Battlefield 2.5er? – This is a person who loved the Battlefield 2 game, or in most cases only played BF2, and after that only wanted every Battlefield game after that to be Battlefield 2.5. These people usually did not like 2142 and hated and despised the Bad Company Series and Battlefield 3. The reasoning they give for hating those games is because “they are not truly Battlefield”. Features are gone that were in BF2, such as VoIP, squad numbers, commander, smaller maps, different weapon customizations, etc… They are fanatical that Battlefield 2 was the best game in the entire series and any deviation from that is not Battlefield.
Now you may be saying, “Hey! I believe in some of those things! Am I a BF2.5er then?” Chances are no. See there is a difference between wanting certain aspects in a game, or features, or whatever and saying so, versus losing all rational thinking and when facts are presented to you, they are totally ignored and you go on screaming (literally) about how Battlefield is ruined and BF2 was the last true Battlefield game.
See, a true BF 2.5er only wants BF2 remastered. They want everything exactly the same as BF2 with the Frostbite engine. That is it. Same kits, same squads, same maps, same everything. ANY change is not Battlefield. Most 2.5ers will deny this and say they want innovation and improvements, but when you read their posts and what they say, they will contradict themselves or say false things about the other games as if they were true, though a little research shows otherwise. They will take what is not known in a Battlefield game, like the upcoming Battlefield 4 title, and declare that we are not being told because its not going to happen or its going to be different from BF2, even though they have no proof of the feature either way. They will also explain how the game will DIE because the features are gone. They may even mention “roots” a bunch of times.
So what features were in BF2 then?
For those that do not know the features of BF2, here they are:
- Built on the Raster Engine
- Commander Mode
- 6 Man Squads
- Squad Leader
- 7 Classes (Sniper, Spec-Ops, Assault, Anti-Tank, Medic, Support, & Engineer)
- VoIP
- Spectator Mode
- Battle Recorder
- Static Kits (Meaning you can pick primary weapon if unlocked, but that was about it)
- Ranking System (Very long system)
- No health regen
- No vehicle ammo regen
- No vehicle auto repair
- Instant medic bag health (Meaning you get 100% health when you touch a med pack)
- Instant ammo resupply (Same thing as med packs)
- Repair/Heal/Resupply when in a vehicle (Example; If Support was in a tank and drove by someone needing ammo then they would get resupplied)
- Mod Tools
- DLC to purchase
I wrote that list so that you can compare the changes in other Battlefields.
Here is 2142s:
- Built on the Raster Engine
- Commander Mode
- 6 Man Squads
- Squad Leader
- 4 Classes (Recon, Assault, Support, & Engineer)
- VoIP
- Spectator Mode
- Battle Recorder
- Customizable Kits (Meaning you can select a number of different items for your soldier)
- Ranking System (Very short system)
- No health regen
- No vehicle ammo regen
- No vehicle auto repair
- Slow medic box health (Meaning you gradually regain health as you stay close to the med box.)
- Slow ammo resupply (Same thing as med packs)
- Repair/Heal/Resupply when in a vehicle (Example; If Support was in a tank and drove by someone needing ammo then they would get resupplied)
- Mod Tools
- DLC to purchase
So now comes Battlefield 3, the game the 2.5ers said killed Battlefield and made it for CoD players:
- Built on the Frostbite Engine
- 4 Man Squads
- Squad Leader
- 4 Classes (Recon, Assault, Support, & Engineer)
- Customizable Kits (Meaning you can select a number of different items for your soldier)
- Ranking System (Mid Range system)
- Health regen
- Vehicle ammo regen
- Vehicle auto repair
- Slow medic box health (Meaning you gradually regain health as you stay close to the med box.)
- Slow ammo resupply (Same thing as med packs)
- DLC to purchase
As you can see, a lot is gone. Some things were there, but a lot of key items are not. Yes, Battlefield 3 had destruction and a suppression system and some can argue it did have VoIP through Battlelog. Some can argue that my BF2 list didn’t include the in-game browser, which in all honest, doesn’t mean anything. The focus though is what did it have compared to Battlefield 2 and it is obvious it is different. I understood why people complained that Battlefield is taking a turn away from what it was. In fact, that is not even my beef with the 2.5ers. They want those features that they love. OK, I get it. You think BF2 is the greatest and Battlefield is dead to you because this list is smaller.
Now comes Battlefield 4. After Gamescom and the beta this is what Battlefield 4 has:
- Built on the Frostbite Engine
- Commander Mode
- 5 Man Squads
- Squad Leader
- 4 Classes (Recon, Assault, Support, & Engineer)
- VoIP
- Spectator Mode
- Customizable Kits (Meaning you can select a number of different items for your soldier)
- Ranking System (Mid Range system)
- Health regen
- Vehicle ammo regen
- Vehicle auto repair
- Slow medic box health (Actually its a hybrid method)
- Slow ammo resupply (Same thing as med packs)
- DLC to purchase
As you can see, compared with BF2, BF4 has just about everything that was “missing” from Battlefield 2. You would think that the 2.5ers would be very happy with this list, but no. During the beta I heard in many games how this is nothing but BF3.5 as well as how Battlefield is dead and this is nothing like BF2. I already wrote how Battlefield 4 is not like Battlefield 3. On forums I saw people writing make believe lists of problems they had in the beta and how things were not balanced and how battlepacks were “pay-to-win” and how there was no recoil on weapons and a very fast time to death ratio. Out right lying is what I call that. I was in the beta and none of that is true at all. I even have a video on my YouTube video showing all that to be false.
And THIS, my friends, is why I have had enough of the BF 2.5ers. Before I understood their complaints with features gone, but now, it is obvious, that they have no intentions of improving future games or the Battlefield series, but just want everyone to play BF2 forever and are willing to lie to make it so.
What is really sad about this is that BF2 is still out there and they can go play it whenever they want. When I challenged a 2.5er in the beta they said they can’t go play it because it is dead. Dead?!? How can the greatest FPS game ever made in the history of the FPS genre be dead? CS.S isn’t dead. CoD4 isn’t dead. Heck, Battlefield 2142 isn’t dead. The mods of BF2 are not dead. So that thinking makes no sense.
The truth now is BF 2.5ers are just trolling and have been so used to complaining that even though they are practically getting 2.5 in BF4, it is not enough. It’s all or nothing with them. I have been called a DICE fanboy because I enjoyed Battlefield 3. Well, I say at least I am not playing a dead game and I am going to be enjoying Battlefield 4 while you mope around and try to convince others of your dead cause.
You might be thinking that this is very harsh of me, but after hearing all this for three years now, I’ve just had enough. There are valid reasons to improve ANY Battlefield game. There are good ideas and features that could be implemented. Same goes with adjustments with features as well. I’m going to enjoy my games and call out the lies that people spew for no valid reason. They can go rent their dead BF2 server and try to populate it. Whatever they are looking for in a Battlefield game must be gone forever and they really should move on….or stay in Battlefield 2.
I’ve played all the battlefields, and i mean every single one. Never have i ever had the more fun playing Battlefield 2. It was a game where teamwork mattered, you needed play like a squad in order to win, also teamwork was more of a necessity in Battlefield 2. Now we get this MMo crap where you have to unlock your weapons, level up and this stuff you’d find in a MMo game. If i wanted to play a progression leveling game, i’ll go play WoW or some sort of RPG. Battlefield has lost it’s roots ans is no longer the fun old school style FPS experience that kept it so popular.
Battlefield today is like every other FPS, not a thing different. People are going to games like Project reality, Insurgency and indie BF2 mods for that old school style that they miss. Battlefield 3/4 are just Call of Duty remakes with Vehicles. Nothing sets Battlefield apart anymore.
I understand what you are saying. Gaming has become very commercialized and its a bigger money making industry than Hollywood now. These companies spend millions of dollars to make a game now and they just cant take risks anymore. The game has to be bigger and bigger than the last one.
People also tell what they want with their wallets. CoD is the #1 FPS game for several years now while “simpler” FPS games are just there doing their thing.
Yes, it is true that CoD and Battlefield are a lot more alike than ever before, but it is also true that they are different.
It’s funny reading the comments on the CTE testing site how people keep making suggestions that will make the game more like CoD and run-n-gun, yet these people say it will make it like BF2. Sometimes I wonder if we even played the same game.
Thanks for commenting.
